Organophosphorus Flame Retardants and Plasticizers

Global consumption of organophosphorus flame retardants and plasticizers (OPs), of which some are reported to be toxic, is rapidly increasing. The levels, distribution and sources of 15 OPs were investigated in public and domestic buildings, sewage treatment plants (STPs), deposition and fish. In all sampled environments OPs were detected at relatively high levels (ppt-ppb) and public buildings tended to have higher levels than domestic buildings. OPs were poorly removed from wastewater, especially the chlorinated OPs tended to pass through the STPs without being removed or degraded. Of the total amount of OPs entering the STPs, 50% was emitted to the recipients via the effluent. Based on the findings of the studies, the total mass flow of OPs in Sweden was estimated. Finally, the exposure to OPs via inhalation was examined for five occupational groups in which aircraft technicians were significantly more exposed to OPs than other groups. This book is valuable for professionals in areas like environmental protection, environmental health and industrial hygiene. It may also be useful for manufacturers of OPs and for professionals in legislation and regulation of chemical substances.

Gray Work: Confessions of an American Paramilit...

In this unprecedented audiobook, a paramilitary contractor with more than two decades of experience gives us a firsthand look into the secret lives of America's private warriors and their highly covert work around the world. Author Jamie Smith has planned and executed hundreds of missions on behalf of government agencies and private industry in some of the world's most dangerous hot spots - and lived to tell the tale. They are elite warriors who run highly dangerous missions deep inside foreign countries on the brink of war. Jamie Smith knows these men well. Not only is he one of them, but he was the founding director of one of the most successful global, private military contracting firms. For the first time, he breaks his silence, pulling back the curtain to reveal in raw, intimate terms exactly what paramilitary spies and operators like him do when the government cannot act or take public responsibility. Combining the thrilling narrative of an international spy thriller with bracing boots-on-the-ground realism, Gray Work follows Smith through grinding CIA training and his career as an operative, his work with Blackwater Security, and the creation of his own successful company. Here is the grit and gristle of modern warfare, from espionage and assassinations, rescues and renditions; from the dark corners of the Arab Spring and the fall of Qadhafi to black ops; from Syria to Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, and beyond. Smith has fought terrorists and won; he was ambushed on a mission in Pakistan and took a bullet through his shoulder and to his back and subsequently survived a grueling mountain trek that almost cost him his life. As founding director of Blackwater Security and then as head of his own company, Smith has helped shape a decade of war. His book powerfully illustrates how the men who serve in this gray area between the public and private worlds are transforming the art and science of modern warfare. 1. Language: English. Cooperative Business Movement, 1950 to the Present

The United Nations declared 2012 the year of cooperatives, emphasizing that there is an alternative to privately owned firms. While greed and mismanagement have caused world financial and economic crises, co-ops offer another type of business for economic activities that is less exposed to aggressive capitalism. This book provides a problem-oriented overview of the development of cooperatives over the last fifty years. The global study addresses the major challenges cooperatives face, such as the organizational innovations introduced to acquire necessary risk-capital and implement growth-related strategies, the wave of demutualization in developed nations and their ability to construct an original consumer politics. The contributors to this volume discuss the successes and failures of the cooperatives and ask whether they are an outdated model of enterprise. They document a wave of foundations of new co-ops, new forms of collaboration between them and a growing trend toward globalization.

Zombie Apocalypse

The end of the world as you know it. What are you going to do when it happens? Because it will. Yuck it up all you want to. Write the whole zombie apocalypse off to Hollywood hype. Go right ahead and keep boating down the river called Denial, Cleo. Send me a postcard when the zombies are beating down the pyramid door. You think it can't happen? Ever heard of antibiotic resistant viruses? Did you know that tales of the reanimated dead date back 4,500 years? Did you know the freaking CDC has a plan for the zombie apocalypse. (Thank God they didn't put FEMA on this thing or we would be screwed.) Admit it. You wouldn't be looking at this book if something wasn't nagging you. Global warming, threatened pandemics, contaminated water table, a rising culture of violence. Maybe you don't believe in zombies per se . . . yet . . . but you do know that people are just edgy enough already that civilization and civilized behavior are headed to hell in a handbasket as soon as disaster strikes. Two words for you: Hurricane Katrina. Okay two more, cluster and . . . You get my drift. I'm not some black ops, ninja, undead-fighting, SWAT guru. I'm just someone who plans on staying alive. And if I do die, I plan to be definitively dead, not kinda dead on the hoof. Believe or don't believe. Frankly, I could care less, but I will give you one huge tip. When the dead are roaming the streets, you'll have one major advantage they won't -- you'll still be able to think. I actually suggest you dust off your brain and start using it now. You might have a steep learning curve. This is a book for both the pre- and post-apocalypse crowd. If you're ready to get off your complacent backside and prepare for what's coming, I'll show you how to get started with an EDC (every day carry) survival kit and move through threat assessment, defensive strategies, basic weapons selection, and planning your long-term cache of supplies. If you're hunkered down clutching a filthy copy of this book in a ruined store, get the hell out of there! Take the book, go someplace safe, breathe, and let's get to work.
