Organophosphorus Flame Retardants and Plasticizers

Global consumption of organophosphorus flame retardants and plasticizers (OPs), of which some are reported to be toxic, is rapidly increasing. The levels, distribution and sources of 15 OPs were investigated in public and domestic buildings, sewage treatment plants (STPs), deposition and fish. In all sampled environments OPs were detected at relatively high levels (ppt-ppb) and public buildings tended to have higher levels than domestic buildings. OPs were poorly removed from wastewater, especially the chlorinated OPs tended to pass through the STPs without being removed or degraded. Of the total amount of OPs entering the STPs, 50% was emitted to the recipients via the effluent. Based on the findings of the studies, the total mass flow of OPs in Sweden was estimated. Finally, the exposure to OPs via inhalation was examined for five occupational groups in which aircraft technicians were significantly more exposed to OPs than other groups. This book is valuable for professionals in areas like environmental protection, environmental health and industrial hygiene. It may also be useful for manufacturers of OPs and for professionals in legislation and regulation of chemical substances.

He who controls social media controls the world. A sinister force seeks to do just that, and nothing is going to stand in the way. All it needs is one final piece of the puzzle. When a disruptive pattern of social media outages escalates, bad-ass data forensics specialist Rachel Vaughn is called upon for her expertise, setting her on the hunt for an algorithmic key with the power to take down the entire global infrastructure. Guided by an otherworldly group of four, Rachel has been entrusted with the missing puzzle piece, and the bad guys know it. With Special Ops agent Grayson Blaine by her side, she outmaneuvers the enemy in what may prove to be her most dangerous assignment ever. Will Rachel find the key before the entire social media infrastructure is hijacked? And as the outages continue, can the world function without its social media fix, or is it too late? An unusual and intriguing serial that resists categorization, the Clairvoyant Serial is a modern-day morality tale about power in the age of global connection and social media influence. Carrying heavy baggage from her past, Rachel Vaughn leads the way in an intellectually challenging saga that features good versus evil along with significant moments of temptation. Gray Work: Confessions of an American Paramilit...

In this unprecedented audiobook, a paramilitary contractor with more than two decades of experience gives us a firsthand look into the secret lives of America's private warriors and their highly covert work around the world. Author Jamie Smith has planned and executed hundreds of missions on behalf of government agencies and private industry in some of the world's most dangerous hot spots - and lived to tell the tale. They are elite warriors who run highly dangerous missions deep inside foreign countries on the brink of war. Jamie Smith knows these men well. Not only is he one of them, but he was the founding director of one of the most successful global, private military contracting firms. For the first time, he breaks his silence, pulling back the curtain to reveal in raw, intimate terms exactly what paramilitary spies and operators like him do when the government cannot act or take public responsibility. Combining the thrilling narrative of an international spy thriller with bracing boots-on-the-ground realism, Gray Work follows Smith through grinding CIA training and his career as an operative, his work with Blackwater Security, and the creation of his own successful company. Here is the grit and gristle of modern warfare, from espionage and assassinations, rescues and renditions; from the dark corners of the Arab Spring and the fall of Qadhafi to black ops; from Syria to Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, and beyond. Smith has fought terrorists and won; he was ambushed on a mission in Pakistan and took a bullet through his shoulder and to his back and subsequently survived a grueling mountain trek that almost cost him his life. As founding director of Blackwater Security and then as head of his own company, Smith has helped shape a decade of war. His book powerfully illustrates how the men who serve in this gray area between the public and private worlds are transforming the art and science of modern warfare. 1. Language: English.
